Tourist Information Centre
Market Square, Lerwick
Our Tourist Information Centre in Lerwick is a treasured local resource that has long stood as a beacon of our community's hospitality. It has welcomed thousands of visitors from all around the globe every year and is equally precious to Shetland residents.
After 'Visit Scotland' closed the centre in 2024, the Shetland Tourism Association (STA) stepped in with a petition and fundraiser to save this important tourist site. Two of our members subsequently purchased the property and the STA is now finalising a lease and preparing to manage the shop.
Community Ownership Survey
As the STA works to reopen the Tourist Centre, we need your help in charting the direction. The property will remain privately owned and leased to the STA. We are exploring the possibility of developing the facility as a community-owned business to protect this vital resource for all Shetlanders and visitors? The survey below will aid our decision-making. Your feedback will be helpful in determining the future of the Tourist Centre?
Benefits for co-owners:
• Pride of ownership
• Discounts on Shetland crafts offered for sale in the shop.
• Volunteer opportunities - Meet tourists and Shetlanders.
• Representation on the Board of Trustees.
